xAI
We build AI to understand the universe. Frontier reasoning, real-time voice, and generative media — designed to extend what humanity can know and do.
About
Founded: March 2023 by Elon Musk, along with a team of AI researchers (including Igor Babuschkin, formerly of Google DeepMind, as chief engineer). The company was officially announced on July 12, 2023, and is headquartered at Stanford Research Park in Palo Alto, California.
Mission: xAI was founded to counter what Musk called political correctness in other generative AI models, positioning itself as an alternative to labs like OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft, with a stated focus on "truth, whether politically correct or not."
Products:
- Grok — its flagship AI chatbot
- Grokipedia — an AI-driven encyclopedia project
- X (formerly Twitter) — Musk sold X to xAI in an all-stock deal in March 2025, valuing X at $33 billion, folding the social platform into the AI company.
Corporate structure: In February 2026, xAI was acquired by Musk's SpaceX, becoming a subsidiary as SpaceX consolidated its AI operations ahead of a planned IPO later in 2026. Reuters reported the deal valued xAI at $250 billion and SpaceX at $1 trillion, with xAI shareholders receiving 0.1433 SpaceX shares for each xAI share held. Notably, the merger triggered a restructuring, and all 11 original xAI co-founders had departed by late March 2026 — only Musk remains from the founding leadership.
Funding & scale: xAI's valuation rose from $24 billion (Series B, September 2024) to $250 billion at acquisition in February 2026 — roughly a 10x increase in 16 months. A $10B raise combining debt and equity in July 2025 was followed by a $20B Series E, with investors including Valor Equity Partners, Fidelity, Qatar Investment Authority, MGX, Nvidia, and Cisco.
Revenue: Standalone AI revenue (excluding X) hit roughly $500 million ARR in 2025, up from about $350 million in Grok-generated revenue for the full year. Separately, X's subscription business alone reached $1 billion in annualized recurring revenue by February 2026.
Products/pricing: Consumer tiers include SuperGrok (~$30/month) and SuperGrok Heavy (~$300/month), alongside business offerings like Grok Business ($30/seat/month) and Grok Enterprise with SSO, SCIM, and audit controls.
